Here we are in the midst of “Snowmagedeon” [as my comedian doctor pointed out] and it is only halfway through February. What will we do when we don’t see all the cancellations running at the bottom of the television screens, or hear the whine of snow blowers [or scrap of shovels], or even brave the roads for jobs or appointments or gaining for “provisions”? And they are still predicting more snow. Rule of thumb – if in doubt about the weather, call ahead. We have been fortunate enough to only have to cancel one class so far.
Our dances so far in February have been great fun. Our cooperative dances with Rhythm Reelers in having Tom Davis for Valentine’s Weekend was great fun. Both Friday and Saturday nights had several banner activities and lots of dancers. I’m afraid to say that the dance on the 27th went well because of the unpredictability of the weather – but we all know that if the dance happened Gary and Chuck Berry were real crowd pleasers! We’ve appreciated all those who have come for banner activities including Rhythm Reelers, Orbiting Squares, and Hi-Timers. We’ve tried to reciprocate as soon as possible. We love having people at our dances and attending other dances.
We look forward to our March dances on the 13th with a St. Patrick’s Dance with Jason Raleigh and Bob Shover, followed by the 27th with Danny Beck and Chuck Berry. Remember to bring your students to any of our dances since they are all Hi-Lo until all the clubs graduate their students by May. Then all dances will go back to our normal plus level. Also, mark your calendars for our April dances on the April 10th with Ed Laudenschlager and Janet McGrath – followed by the dance on the April 24th 50’s-60’s Dance with Jack Pladdys & Dave Stuthard and cuer Bob Shover.
Remember, we want you to plan ahead for our two really special dances:
June 19th A TRAIL DANCE for the National Convention – with Lottie Ainsworth and
Chuck Berry at the United Methodist Church on 775 Galloway Rd.
December 31st New Year’s Eve Dance and Retirement Party for Dave Stuthard
with Dave, Jack Pladdys, and Sam Dunn along with cuer Bob Shover. Flyers are available for the dance now with all prices and procedures listed. Remember that this will be a catered dinner celebrating Dave’s career as a square dance caller – and keep in mind that the dance will be three callers for four hours. Again, this is at the United Methodist Church .
Classes continue on Monday night at 7:30 at the Evans Center . Our students are moving quickly through Mainstream onto Plus lessons starting soon. Dave is still keeping us moving and laughing with the students and angels enjoying every minute. Hopefully, you have noticed our students out at many of the dances that are available to them. When you’re students come to our Hi-Lo dances, remember that they are half price.
We are saddened by the passing of Henry Metheney on February 6, 2010 and our hearts are with Irene who had been married to Henry for 50 years – but has known him since they were in 2nd grade. Cancer has changed many of our lives, and Henry’s sudden death due to pancreatic cancer is not exception. We all deeply feel the loss and the impact on our club members and others who know and love both Henry and Irene. We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers along with John and Emma Sparks still dealing with serious health issues.
Keep well, keep safe and see you in a square.
